You’ve heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” But is what you eat is making you sick? Food allergies and food sensitivities are one of the least diagnosed conditions today. Too often people think of allergies as inhaled allergies that cause wheezing, sneezing, or itchy and watery eyes. While those are common symptoms of inhaled allergies, there are also symptoms of food allergies and food sensitivities.
Here are some symptoms of food sensitivities and food allergies that you may not recognize:
Eczema or other skin problems
Difficulty thinking or reasoning
Food sensitivity is caused by the inability of the body to properly process a food. It may be the lack of an enzyme, sensitivity to additives and preservatives, irritable bowel syndrome, or stress. Food sensitivity can cause many of the same symptoms as food allergy, but the tell-tale immunoglobulin (IgE) is not present. While only a small portion of the population has true food allergy, many people live with undiagnosed food sensitivities.
Food allergy is caused by a defect in the immune system. The body does not correctly identify harmless proteins. Instead of marking them as “harmless” and ignoring them, they are identified as “harmful” and a full scale defense is implemented. As a response, IgE (a human immunoglobulin) is released and histamines and leukotrienes are produced, making you feel terrible. The allergic reaction is identified by the presence of the IgE.
Undiagnosed food sensitivities or allergies can make your life miserable. Stop guessing if those migraines, weight gain issues, irritability, or fatigue are caused by chronic food-related issues. When problem foods are identified and removed from your diet, you will feel better immediately and you will wonder why you didn’t get tested sooner. Testing at RevitaLife is the first step to eliminating the misery caused by certain foods. Call us at 941-377-4555 today or click here to use our contact form.
TESTING FOR FOOD SENSITIVITY
Food intolerance occurs when your digestive system reacts to either organic or chemical additives in your food. A common “trigger food” is lactose found in milk products. You may have a mild, moderate, or severe intolerance to such trigger foods. This varies from person to person depending on your degree of sensitivity.
Food allergies occur when your immune system sends out a false alarm. Your symptoms are a result of the conflict between your body’s defense mechanism and the invading food (often a protein). The most common food allergies are to peanuts, walnuts, pecans, almonds, fish, and shellfish, milk, eggs, soy products, and wheat.
The ALCAT test is the gold standard in testing for sensitivity to over 350 foods and additives. It is a quick and easy blood test that checks for intolerance or allergy to specific foods, food additives, food colorings, and other chemicals. It is much more reliable and faster than food elimination testing. Based on the results, you will be counseled on what foods, additives, or preservatives to eliminate from your diet. Fasting is not necessary prior to the ALCAT test.
TESTING FOR FOOD ALLERGY
Like the test for food sensitivity, the food allergy test does not require fasting. Only a small amount of blood is necessary to test for a wide range of common food allergies. Because many prescribed and over-the-counter medications can affect the results of this test, you will need to provide a list of your medications when you make your appointment.
